Honoring The Blessed Virgin Mary On Holy Saturday
It will be observed that the Holy Saturday which is part of the triduum or the 3 days before the Resurrection has no liturgical celebration – no Holy Mass, no any Church thing. Rather, the Holy Saturday is labeled as the day of silence, meant for meditation and reflection on the passion and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. This is also the day where we can show our care and love for the Blessed Virgin Mary, who serves as our Spiritual Mother, who at that time was hurting and sorrowful, grieving for the death of His Son. At the same time, it is also the day of many hours of waiting for the Risen Lord on Easter Sunday.
Based on its culture and tradition, the Catholic Church devotes Saturdays, especially first Saturdays of the month, to the Blessed Virgin Mother. As our Spiritual Mother here on earth who continues to love us, intercede for us when we needed help, we have to be with her, think about her, or at least say a prayer, especially today – this Holy Saturday. This is probably one of the reasons why Saturdays are dedicated to her.
Our world is troubled these days. People’s lives are filled with uncertainty due to this terrible Covid-19 virus (that has mutated to other variants) which continues to plague certain countries, both industrialized and developing economies such as the Philippines. This pandemic took a toll on everyone’s present and future plans, resulting to an increase rates on people’s stress, depression and feeling of hopelessness. It’s not only the people but even the businesses, the frontline workers, and the Church are hurting too.
This is probably the best time, this Holy Saturday, that we seek our Blessed Mother’s help to intercede for our supplications, for our petitions to our Lord God, to have mercy and compassion on all of us. The Blessed Mother will not abandon us in this time of crisis, she has always been with us since time immemorial, and anyone who has recourse to her and implore for her assistance will be left unaided. Our Blessed Mother carries many titles on her head, among others, she is the Health of the Sick, the Comforter of the afflicted, as we implore her in the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary when we pray the Holy Rosary, she will protect us in the hour of need, during this Covid-19 virus pandemic.
So, as we await for the Risen Lord on Easter Sunday, we pray to Our Lady to intercede for us, to pray for us so that this crisis that the world is currently facing will end soon, to inspire us to emulate her life of faith, hope and love, thus making us more closer for God, and to help us pray that we may be filled with hope and a joyful heart as we await the grace of new life during this Easter Season. Amen.
Jesus, King of Mercy, we trust in You. Amen.
O Holy Mary, our hope handmaid of the Lord, pray for us. Amen.
If you know the beautiful song below, feel free to sing it in the comforts of your home!
On this day, O beautiful Mother,
On this day we give thee our love.
Near thee, Madonna, fondly we hover,
Trusting thy gentle care to prove.
On this day we ask to share,
Dearest Mother, thy sweet care;
Aid us ere our feet astray
Wander from thy guiding way….
