A Grateful Heart and The Grace to Keep Ego In Check: A Source of Joy
Gratitude and humility are deeply interconnected virtues that have a profound and synergistic effect on a person’s well-being, both physically and spiritually. These qualities enrich our relationships, foster inner peace, and draw us closer to God and one another.
Gratitude as a Source of Joy and Connection
Gratitude allows us to appreciate the blessings in our lives and the kindness of others. Something as simple as saying “Thank you” with a smile can brighten someone’s day and uplift our own spirits. When we acknowledge the goodness in our lives, we open our hearts to greater joy and contentment. A grateful heart recognizes that we are not self-sufficient but are continually supported by the efforts and sacrifices of others. This awareness strengthens our connections with those around us and deepens our relationship with God, the ultimate source of all blessings. Among others, small gestures that demonstrate gratitude and humility include: Offering a sincere compliment to someone for their efforts or qualities; Taking the time to write a handwritten note of thanks; Acknowledging and celebrating the contributions of others in group achievements; Volunteering time or resources to help those in need; and Returning a favor or extending help to others as a way of paying forward the kindness received.
In fact, offering one’s time and skills for the benefit of nonprofit organizations or community groups is a powerful expression of these virtues. Volunteering selflessly not only uplifts others but also enriches the volunteer’s soul. For example, mentoring immigrants seeking better opportunities, leading a parish choir, or assisting organizations like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Orphans International, or Nature Conservancy, are all meaningful ways to contribute. I once did that when I was abroad. Try to attempt visiting the imprisoned, the sick and the elderly. Each act of service reminds us of the blessings we’ve received and allows us to be instruments of God’s love in the lives of others.
Humility: The Path to Grace and Growth
Humility is the foundation of true greatness. It keeps our ego in check and allows us to recognize our limitations and dependence on God. As St. Peter reminds us, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” A humble heart does not seek to elevate itself above others but instead seeks to serve and uplift. It enables us to admit our mistakes, learn from them, and respect the views and experiences of others. Humility is a reminder that, in the grand scheme of things, we are infinitesimally small, yet infinitely valued by God. Our accomplishments, good looks, and material wealth are not reasons for pride but opportunities to glorify God and serve others.
Acknowledging Our Benefactors
We must cultivate the habit of recognizing and thanking those who have played a role in our growth and success. This includes mentors, benefactors, and even strangers who have offered a helping hand in moments of need. Our family and friends, often described as having “million-dollar hearts,” deserve our appreciation for their unwavering support and love. By expressing gratitude to them, we acknowledge the interconnectedness of our lives and the many ways God’s grace is manifested through others.
A Grateful and Humble Prayer
Loving and generous God, we thank You for the gift of a grateful heart and the grace to keep our ego in check, even when we falter. Continue to grant us the virtue of humility so that it becomes second nature as we journey through life. We thank You for everyone who has shown kindness and appreciation to us. Help us to return that kindness, not only to them but also to those in dire need. We pray for our family and friends, that they may embrace the virtues of gratitude and humility and, in doing so, find happiness and fulfillment. Amen.
By living with gratitude and humility, we not only make God happy but also bring joy to others. These virtues help us lead a meaningful and blessed life, enabling us to be instruments of God’s love and compassion in the world. Let us give to thanks to God with a grateful heart for everything we have.
